University professor Madeline Walters isn’t doing too well in the dating game. Good men are hard to find, so she’s happy spending time with her Maltese puppy Cinnamon, and her precocious teenage daughter Chloe.
Across town, architect Kevin Fallon, a widower, is having little luck dating too. But when his work takes him to Los Angeles University for a project, he bumps into Madeline and the attraction between the two is fast and mutual.
The trouble is both Kevin’s son, thirteen year-old Jordan, and Madeline’s pooch Cinnamon are dead set against losing their parents in a romance.
Little Cinnamon takes the lead and does her best to ruin the budding relationship between Madeline and Kevin, spoiling dates whenever she can. But Jordan has come to appreciate Madeline’s daughter Chloe helping him fight off the local bully, and impress his pretty neighbor Heather.
But Cinnamon still wants Madeline all to herself, and our crafty little canine goes into overdrive. She has her chance when Madeline leaves town for a conference and Kevin and Jordan agree to take care of her. Cinnamon wastes no time in running away. When Madeline calls to check in, Kevin doesn’t really come clean with her, focusing instead on just trying to find the dog.
Madeline meanwhile returns to see Kevin in the arms of another woman (who is really his visiting sister) and finds out that he lost Cinnamon. She leaves him, returns none of his phone calls and makes plans to spend Christmas with a fellow professor who’s always pined after her.
Chloe tips off Kevin and Jordan that Madeline’s leaving with Cinnamon for the holiday with Professor Meinhardt. Jordan and Kevin race to the airport where, in a daring-do through the security barriers, Jordan and Cinnamon all save the day by getting Madeline off her plane and back into Kevin’s arms.
The engagement of Kevin and Madeline soon follows, a real Christmas miracle made possible by one clever little Maltese, Cinnamon.
