Love of a Siam’s Mario Maurer begins production his first film in China today. The romantic comedy Love that day 爱在那一天 costars New My Fair Princess and Dream of the Red Chamber’s Kan Qingzi, Bu Bu Jingxin’s Ye Qing and singer Philip Wu Yi. Mario , who’s of German and Chinese descent, said he has always wanted to film a Chinese film for his mother, so he accepted the film unconditionally as soon as he read the script and loved it. Meanwhile, this will be the first leading role for Kan Qingzi.

Love that day is another one of the increasingly more common films starring young actors. Romantic comedies have always been rare in mainland, and those that use new actors is even rarer. In the past, the privilege of using new actors have mostly been given to established directors like Wang Xiaoshuai or Zhang Yimou. Luckily, now that China’s film industry is getting larger, smaller films starring young leads are also having success in the box office . For examples, both Heaven Eternal Earth Everlasting two years ago and Yang Mi’s recent horror film this year were box office hits despite their lack of previous film stars.

Nevertheless, such films, like many films in China, are still risky films, and it’s hard to predict which ones will fail and which ones will succeed. eeMedia’s Happy Boys Musical failed in box office despite good critical review, and Disney’s High School Musical was a flop despite coming from two high-profiled company. Other romances, like Li Xiaolu and Mike He’s 7 days or Zhang Han and Zheng Shuang’s No Limits, have also mostly gone under the radar. At this point, it’s still hard to tell whether this film will be successful or not, but at least the cast is super cute.
